As moms, I find many of us are overwhelmed in this wireless age with constant reminders of who we “should” be. An impossible standard which we will never measure up that often leads us in a whirlwind of self criticism. Recently, I was challenged by Alicia Knust (www.adventureswithmylittles.com) to take the Rocking Motherhood challenge. As someone who strives for excellence, I spend more time focused on what I want to improve than celebrating the work God is already doing in me. Tracie in Unsinkable Faith defines a stronghold as “anything that holds us back from living life the way God intended and hinders our ability to live life with optimism and full of peace, love, joy and hope.” Sometime I wonder if my constant desire for self-improvement at times looks more like a critical stronghold than strength. So here goes some positive thinking that hopefully aligns well with God’s word.
- I strive to model a life plugged into a thriving relationship with God so that my kids will catch God at work and experience Him throughout our days.
- I love truth and learning and display an ever-evolving mom who wants to know and grow.
- I am invested in knowing God’s word and hiding it in my heart and allowing them opportunities to do the same by involving them in church activities such as AWANA, Upward sports, and VBS.
- I work at making our home a joyful place and when we get off track, I attempt to help us reboot often asking our Amazon Echo Alexa (who sometimes is the only person who does what I ask without asking my why? or can I do it later) to fill our home with worship music like the Chris Tomlin playlist.
- I allow all of us to feel and display emotions while working at managing them in healthy ways.
- We work hard but we also play hard and make rest a priority.
- I am curious about my kids and their friends and make an intentional effort to listen to their words without advice or judgement for a moment every day I’m with them.
- I share loving, physical touch through daily hugs, kisses, and love pats.
- I laugh with them. I laugh at myself. And I try to find the funny especially after a rough day or tense seasons.
- I pray for them and with them. I ask God’s blessing on them and pray hope for their futures and gratitude for the gifts they are to me.
